| Summary |
America's President won't talk to him. Israel's Prime Minister has threatened to exile him. Why has Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat - once feted at the White House but now holed up in his West Bank headquarters - become such an outcast? In this report for the BBC, Jeremy Bowen travels to Palestine to investigate Arafat's commitment to peace. Bowen examines Arafat's connections to the feared Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade and asks if he must take the blame for the wave of suicide bomb attacks on Israelis. As recently as last Saturday (February 21) the Al-Aqsa brigade claimed responsibility for an explosion that killed eight Israelis and wounded more than 60 others. Arafat has been one of the constants of modern Middle East politics. He has led the Palestinians for nearly four decades while Israeli and American leaders have come and gone. This program looks at how Arafat ruthlessly wields his power and poses the question: despite all his faults, can there be peace without Arafat? |
