A husband and wife anthropologist team travel to a remote island to study the sexual mores of a group of villagers in a society where women have higher status than men. Their marriage begins to break down when Evelyn realizes her husband, Phillip, is wrongly interpreting the research to further his own academic ambitions. With the help of a pearl trader, she travels to another island to conduct her own study. While she is away, disaster strikes when natives attack Phillip and war breaks out in the region.
