Summary The emotional, physical and spiritual journey of an Alzheimer's sufferer
Notes This is a moving, very personal account of one woman's daily struggle with Alzheimer's disease. Diagnosed at 46, when she was holding down a demanding, 70 hours a week senior public service job, while being a lone mum to 3 girls, Christine first put the symptoms down to stress and exhaustion. Sometimes she became lost driving to work, forgot the names of familiar office staff, or 'blanked out' mid-sentence. Constant migraines sapped her energy. It was after a routine CT scan to investigate the headaches that the real cause of her problems began to emerge- brain shrinkage, eventually diagnosed as Alzheimer's disease. The book documents the experiences of Christine and her family through all the tests, the blunt diagnosis and the gradual decline of her mental function. It is honest and insightful, detailing the light- hearted and peaceful times as well as the despair of the bad days. The impression is positive and illuminating. Christine points often to her faith in God and the support and prayers of her
church 'family', as being the source of her strength and contentment. She also explains what she is doing her self to make the most of her abilities and to deal with the progress of the disease. The lengthy last chapter is devoted to an easy-to-understand summary of facts about Alzheimer's disease, causes, symptoms, incidence and the myths associated with it. All in all a very interesting and meaningful book, both for people with Alzheimer's disease and for family and professional carers
