It is the day after the Second World War ended. Nine million Japanese are homeless. Three million have been killed in the war and 1.3 million of these were civilians who died in the massive American bombing campaign that included the atomic bombing. More than 6.5 million Japanese, half of them civilians, are detained in the former occupied territories. There are about 150, 000 lost, orphaned or abandoned children living in the streets. More than 2 million Japanese civilians and military are in the hands of the Soviets and most of the soldiers who fought in Malaysia and Burma will not return before the end of 1947. Post-war repatriation will continue until 1955-57. This two-part documentary series Japan In Ruins looks at how it is only recently that the Japanese themselves have begun to show a desire to know and understand this pre-war to post-war period. Director Serge Viallet recounts such events as the invasion of China in 1931, the Pacific War from 1942, the conditions of surrender in 1945, followed by the forced reconstruction at under the authority of the victorious Americans. Part One: Tokyo, The Day The War EndedThrough a series of flashbacks, Tokyo, The Day The War Ended recalls the war years beginning with the Japanese invasion of China in 1931, through to the surrender ceremony in the Bay of Tokyo on board the USS Missouri on September 2, 1945. The American command invited 170 journalists and 25 American cinema cameras (not including the Soviet, British and French cameras) which shot more than seven hours of images. They filmed the details of this ceremony including the presence of all the powers that took part in the conflict and who came to witness and sign the Japanese declaration of surrender. There were representatives of Nationalist China, the USSR, the Netherlands, the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, France and representatives from various US military forces.
