Researching environmental compliance through semi-structured interviews : perceptions about the impact on work and well-being for ship crews / Ngwatung Akamangwa
Environmental compliance issues had generated considerable interest when this study began in 2009. While such interest highlighted some practical difficulties faced by ship crews when complying with regulatory requirements for reducing air pollution, little was known about the overall work experience afloat. Earlier accounts about the impact of environmental compliance focused on land-based workers who were fulfilling the requirements as specialists, without considering possible effects on workers in other sectors who are not continuously engaged in the activities. This research examined the practice from the perspective of ship crews who are performing various pollution-prevention activities as non-specialists, to provide a deeper understanding of the practice on board ships
