Summary |
"It is said that the past is another country. In Australia, looking at the past through a racial looking glass is to encounter a parallel universe. A Northern Town looks at how some of the residents of Kempsey are experiencing the living history of their hometown. With a third of Kempsey's population made up of Aboriginal people, the town is a hotbed of covert and overt racism on one hand and third world poverty and oppression on the other. The program reveals a history of covered up massacres, Aboriginal people who were herded onto missions, a segregated hospital, a segregated swimming pool and segregated cinemas. Kempsey was also the home to the notorious Kinchela Home for Aboriginal Boys. The long history of white suffering is also revealed, with tales of men lost in wars, families torn apart by tragedy - madness, suicide, poverty - and by cataclysmic floods that swept much of the town away." -- SBS website |
