Summary Documents the making of Rolf de Heer's eleventh feature film, Ten canoes, which won the Special Grand Jury prize, 2006 Cannes International Film Festival. Both the movie and the documentary were made by award-winning director, Rolf de Heer. Ten canoes tells the story of the people of the Arafura swamp, in their language, and is set a long time before the coming of the Balanda, as white people were known. Dayindi covets one of the wives of his older brother. To teach him the proper way, he is told a story from the mythical past, a story of wrong love, kidnapping, sorcery, bungling mayhem and revenge gone wrong. Rolf de Heer narrates the documentary, talking through the process and challenges of making Ten canoes. The rewarding outcome in the making of Ten canoes is that the film crew and directors returned with a deeper understanding not only of this culture, but of all cultures, including their own. The set builders and canoe builders in the area have brought back from a faraway place some of their culture. They can now walk a little taller than the 'balanda' and with more self-confidence. Above all, this documentary gives a refreshing insight into an aspect of Australian indigenous culture rarely shown
