Summary "A five-part series from the BBC that ventures into a few of the world's places that are not officially recognised as fully-functioning autonomous countries for various reasons, but ones that are nevertheless determined to be independent. Presenter, Simon Reeve travels to these places to discover what it is like to live and work there. In tonight's episode, Simon travels to mountainous South Ossetia, which is in Georgia and was formerly part of the Soviet Union. South Ossetia is inhabited mostly by ethnic Ossetians, who speak a language remotely related to Farsi. Russian peacekeeping forces are kept on the border on a peace-keeping mandate, but the soldiers see themselves as South Ossetians. After briefly visiting Ajara - the breakaway state that was recently brought back to the fold of Georgia by President Mikhail Saakashvili, Simon and his crew travel to the third breakaway state: Abkhazia, where they are denied entry several times. Situated in the north-western corner of Georgia with the Black Sea to the south-west and the Caucasus Mountains and Russia to the north-east, Abkhazia was once known as a prime holiday destination for the Soviet elite. Abkhazia's battle for independence from Georgia since the collapse of the USSR has reduced the economy to ruins, forcing many people to live in squalor as refugees, without electricity or running water and unable to return to their homeland of Abkhazia.
