Summary |
Summary: This is a unique private collection documenting the social life of Australian soldiers in New Guinea during World War I and their sympathetic engagement with local indigenous communities. Social activities photographed include the "Queen of Diamonds" play, with both indigenous and European performers, and a "Fancy Dress cricket match". The ethnographic images include many portraits of local people and dancing, fishing and market scenes. As well as pictures from the Rabaul area there are photos taken at Morobe and Marcom River. Named people in the images include a Private Bill O'Brien, Warrant Officer Collins and Sgts MacDemott, Joe Butterworth and Fox. -- from Bookseller's brief |
