Summary This programme tells the story of Himmler's loyalty and betrayal. Hitler considered Himmler to be his most loyal henchman. Yet, in the final days of the War, he discovered that "faithful Heinrich" had been making secret preparations for taking over after the Fuhrer's death. Here we see that this betrayal was only the final act in a dangerous drama of double-dealing and ideological compromises within the Third Reich. The film uses first-hand testimonies, dramatic reconstructions and little-known archive material. It also draws on extensive German, British & American research archives, and on the expertise of Professor Ian Kershaw
