Summary |
"Ernst Roehm's Stormtroopers, the SA, was the most feared organization in Germany throughout the twenties. A paramilitary group of 3 million Brown Shirts, it was the most brutal and effective tool in the Nazi rise to power. So brutal and effective, in fact, that both the infamous Gestapo and SS feared it, and it became a threat to the Fuehrer himself. On June 29th 1934, Hitler ordered the SA leadership to appear for a meeting at the Hotel Hanselbauer. Without warning, the SS burst in, beginning 48 hours of bloodshed in which 1000 of the leading SA, including Roehm, were rounded up and slaughtered. This murderous deed became an ominous warning of what was to come. As Hitler said of the slaughter, "I became the supreme judge of the German people" " -- web |
