Summary |
This dramatization of a famous Australian novel presents an idyllic year in the life of a young woman. Jeannie Taylor marries Aeneas Gunn in 1901, and accompanies him to the Elsey Station near Mataranka, Northern Territory, 300 miles south of Darwin, where he is manager. As one of few white woman to settle in the area, her arrival is seen as highly undesirable by the men on the station: her coming means an end the life that is the very reason they are in the Territory: one of untrammeled freedom, with no need to bother with 'civilization' and its rules. Jeannie Gunn was feisty and good-natured, however, so she tried to fit in, yet remained open to what those around her--white or Aborigine--had to offer. The people and events of "We of the Never Never" are idealized, but her story is representative of Australian frontier myth: in the outback--a forbidding, faraway place, different from anywhere else--men and a few women battled hardship, isolation, and prejudice, and lived legendary, heroic lives |
