Summary |
"Filming once more in the USA, Youssef Chahine's latest film, Alexandria New York summarises the various passions which forged his contrary and complex personality. Chahine reflects on his links with America since his film student days in California, in 1942. Born in Alexandria, the son of a Syrian lawyer, his parents made financial sacrifices to give him a good education. The cosmopolitan Alexandria of the 1930s remains, in Chahine's memories, a lost paradise. In fifty years of film-making he has tackled virtually all the film genres, finally developing his own: autobiographical fiction. The feature film Central Station of 1958 made his name in the West."
