Introduction -- What are contemporary conceptions of educational leadership? -- What can we learn from emergency services management for dealing with crises and emergencies in schools? -- Are the lessons from Black Saturday that can assist schools in planning for emergencies? -- Implications for the art and science of leadership in an education setting |
Summary |
Susan Pascoe AM argues that contemporary educational leaders require the capacity and skills to deal with crises and emergencies, whether such situations are anticipated or unexpected. She refers to the literature on both educational leadership and emergency management, draws upon case studies from the 2009 Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission, for which she was one of the three Commissioners, and uses examples of effective leadership in an emergency to identify the attributes school leaders need to have and develop |
