Summary |
"The Cold War began as America and the Soviet Union each feared a pre-emptive nuclear strike by the other. In 1952 the Americans tested the most powerful weapon the world had seen - the Hydrogen Bomb. In 1953 the Soviets also exploded an H Bomb. The race was on for nuclear supremacy. Korolev's (Steve Nicolson) military paymasters wanted a five ton warhead, a rocket capable of reaching America. On the other side of the world Korolev's rival, Wernher von Braun's (Richard Dillane), plans to pursue a space program seemed thwarted when his funds were cut. In desperation he decided to tell his dreams of space travel direct to the American public and persuaded Walt Disney Productions to become involved. In October 1957 Sputnik 1 became the first man-made object to orbit the Earth. Then on November 3 the Russians sent Laika the dog into orbit. She was the first living creature into space and lived for five hours. The USA answered the Soviet Union challenge on January 31 1958 when von Braun's Explorer One made the history books and in so doing opened the gates to the heavens. The US and the Soviet Union were in a race to space" -- website |
