Notes Library's Whelan copy has original dustjacket; inscribed and signed by the author, "To Philip S. Whelan Esq." 7th July 1939; also inscribed: "The undertakings mentioned in this little book - sound film, broadcasts and still pictures - represent the realisation in part, at anyr ate, of a long-standing ambition. For more than twelve years the writer has cherished the hope that the artistry of the lyrebird should be known, not in Australia only, but overseas as well. Much of the credit for such success as has been achieved in this direction must be given to persons whose names do not appear - to those who made the expensive filming and broadcasting undertakings possible, and to friendds who provided accommodation at week-ends near the forest. Mainly, however, credit is due to the writer's wife, who, throughout twelve winters, left home week after week in the cold dawn and accepted cheerfully very many discomforts in order that the work of the writer should not be hampered.
