This book is the first comprehensive survey of education in Australia from its beginnings to the present day. An important feature of the book is the inclusion of a chapter on Aboriginal education. Dr Barcan then identifies eight main phases of development that took place during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries - education in the early convict settlement, the attempted Anglican monopolu, the denominiational phase, the period of shared power between Church and State, the programme of free, compulsory and secular education, the establishment of the educational ladder, an age of transition, and the new era in education. Each phase is viewed in the light of the dominant social and economic forces od the time. The analysis extends beyong the political and administrative history of education to encompass changes in the curriculum, teaching methods, pupil and teacher assessment and educational aims. Each level of education is examined infant, primary, secondary, tertiary, technical, teacher training and adult education. The organization of the book permits easy identification of the development of education in each colony/State. Although the book will be of particular use to lecturers and students of education and Australian history, it should also appeal to anyone interested in the continuing contovery over education in Australia.
