Summary
The National Environment Protection Council (NEPC) authorised the preparation of a draft National Environment Protection Measure (NEPM) for ambient air quality in 1996. This draft Measure and the Impact Statement are issued for public consultation. The Council's decision to develop a NEPM for ambient air quality is in direct response to community concerns about air quality as an environmental issue. The decision to prepare a NEPM also reflects the importance of ambient air quality as an influence upon human health and a desire by all juridications that a uniform set of national ambient air quality standards for the protection of human health be developed. The Council also addresses the six core air pollutants that are generally accepted as indictors of air quality (carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, sulfure dioxide, lead and particles) and to provide greater certainty to industry and the community
