Summary "Disparities in health and health care across racial, ethnic, and socioeonomic backgrounds in the United States are well documented. The reasons for them, however, are not well understood. Eliminating Health Disparities: Measurement and Data Needs is a comprehensive study of the collection of data by the U.S. Department of Health and Human services on race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic position. It is a broad look at data collections systems both inside the department and by states and private-sector entities. The report identifies strengths and weaknesses in the collection of data on race, ethnicity, socioeconomic position, as well as language and acculturation in the health and health care fields. It reviews current practices in the collection of data on these measures and recommends improvements. While the level of detail that each system can reasonably collect varies, even a minimal amount of information on race, ethncity, socioeconomic position, and acculturation and language use could be enormously helpful to understanding and promoting policies to eliminate disparities."--BOOK JACKET
