Description iv, 67 pages ; 25 cm Summary The Working Group considers that: (1) Governments should continue to promote cost effective energy efficiency measures on the basis of overall economic efficiency as well as reducing, where appropriate, the environmental impacts of petroleum usage -- (2) There is potential in all petroleum using sectors for savings, particularly in the transport sector. Governments should continue to identify and remove any impediments to the market uptake of these measures -- (3) Commonwealth, State and Territory Governments should ensure that relevant energy policies continue to foster an efficient and competitive petroleum exploration and development industry -- (4) While LPG and natural gas are already replacing petroleum derived transport fuels in specific applications, the Working Group considers that other alternative fuels in general are unlikely to play a role in replacing petroleum fueld until the medium to longer term -- (5) The level of oil production in Australia until 2005 is unlikely to change the appropriateness or effectiveness of short term oil supply disruption arrangements -- (6) Oil production in australia is unlikely to decline in the near future.
