Summary |
"Yukina is a 15-year-old girl in Kyoto who is training to become a maiko or apprentice geisha, one of the most traditional and prestigious professions in Japan. She left her simple rural life for the extraordinary world of arts of entertainment. Under the supervision of her madam ("Mother") and helped by her senior maiko mentor ("Big Sister"), Yukina dedicates every waking moment to learning all that's required for the trade, such as dancing, music, make-up and manners. Dotted with traditional events and rituals unique to the profession, the trainee's life is disciplined and hierarchical, in contrast to that of her family and friends back home.
