Summary Salam Ziusudras last saw his father in 1982. His mother, Mey, remembers the exact moment: five-year-old Salam clinging to his Dad as Saddam Hussein's henchmen took Hussain Ziusudras away for 'questioning'. Almost 30 years later, Hussain's remains were found in a mass grave near Baghdad. It's this discovery that prompts Salam Father, Salam's deeply-moving quest to uncover who his Dad really was, and why he was murdered. The quest takes him from suburban Perth via Stockholm to Iraq, to meet and interview relatives, friends and old colleagues of his father's. Everyone offers a theory behind Hussain's murder. Was it because he was Kurdish? Were his Iranian roots to blame? Did a fellow Communist Party member betray him under torture? The final answer will surprise you. Salam Father is an extraordinary film that quietly, poignantly explores so many themes. It's the story of one man, but it's also the story of a country; it's a tale of love, bravery and of family ties; it's a refugee's story; it's surprisingly humorous in such a horrific setting; and it's also a very telling piece on the state of Iraq, post-invasion.
