| Summary |
Necessary Games is a collection of three award-winning short dance films. Featuring members of Adelaide's Restless Dance Theatre, each of the three films showcase unique and compelling dance performances by disabled and non disabled dancers.This week's Artscape comprises the three films - Moths, Sixteen and Necessity and also gives the viewer an insight into the inspirations and ideas that went into making these important works. Conversations with the filmmakers, choreographers and dancers reveal a passionate and intricate understanding of dance and the connections between people.The films were developed by a potent creative team headed by award-winning filmmakers Bryan Mason and Sophie Hyde who worked closely with top choreographers and young members of Restless Dance Theatre to create Necessary Games.Restless Dance Theatre is an exciting Adelaide-based company where non-verbal modes of dance and movement are used as eloquent forms of self-expression. With different takes on intimacy and connection, the films present performances by diverse individuals which are raw, honest, poetic and highly idiosyncratic in nature.The three films deal with the subjects of dreams, desire and intimacy. Each work creates an emotional connection between the dancers and inspires a physical acceptance and freedom of their diverse and, at times, surprising physicality.A must see, Necessary Games has won numerous awards at film festivals around Australia including Best Experimental Short Film at the 2009 Melbourne International Film Festival, Best Short Film at the SA Screen Awards, and most recently Best Work for Sixteen at the ReelDance International Dance on Screen Festival.This work is an important reminder of the right of the performer - disabled or otherwise - to be something more than an exhibit for our curiosity.
