One year after Kevin Rudd's National Apology, The Forgotten Australians brings to light the untold shameful history of Australia's care institutions. Moving, honest and enlightening, the program tells for the first time the stories and suffering of thousands of Australian children, who were put into care in a system that was unscrutinised and overburdened. More than half a million Australians grew up in care between the 1930s and 1980s. Many of the children in these homes and orphanages suffered physical or psychological abuse, and all were emotionally neglected.Now, media attention on this issue continues to grow as the focus turns towards the role of the church and compensation. The head of the Salvation Army is arriving in Australia from London in late 2010 to make an apology. Although most Australians would have met someone raised in care, few have any understanding of what happened and why. Even after the apology, many still don't understand its relevance or importance.
