During 1984 and 1985 the Centre for Program Evaluation at Melbourne College of Advanced Education conducted a national Project on primary teacher education with particular reference to mathematics and science. The Project is unique in that teacher education institutions were involved in the design and data collection phases and contributed to the framing of the final recommendations. The final publication which includes a project summary and main report is based around six themes. Beginning teachers: Problems of induction and their impressions of support from pre - service courses; aquisition and transfer of teaching skills and approaches; relating and integrating: relationships between programs and within courses; information sharing between primary mathematics and science educators; structure of programs; mathematical and scientific aptitudes and attitudes. The project summary contains a series of recommendations for improving programs and courses in primary teacher education. While the focus is on mathematics and science many of the findings will be of interest to other primary educators within colleges and in the school systems
