Fenella Kernebone looks at the female multicultural DJ collective Ladyfingers, Darwin artist Marnie Jay reflects on the city's changing character, a meter-reader stars in 'My Secret Art Life', and singer Ajak Kwai performs.The world of DJing is often seen as a place that's dominated by men, but there's a new DJ collective on the block that's set to change this commonly held misconception. This week on Art Nation, Fenella Kernebone investigates LadyFingers, the first and only multi-cultural women's DJ collective in Australia. The collective is made up of women from diverse cultural backgrounds including Somalia, Malaysia, Indonesia, South Korea, Uruguay, Samoa, New Zealand, Rwanda and Australia, who have come together through a love of music and dance. Kernebone attends a Melbourne gig and meets some of the DJs who are already making waves on the Australian DJ scene. Art Nation also profiles Darwin-based artist Marnie Jay who explores old Darwin's elevated tropical houses and reflects on how the city is changing and laments its disappearing character. The 'My Secret Art Life' segment which looks at people's secret artistic loves, is the poignant and sometimes funny story of a meter-reader - Adrian Maiolla - whose passion is life modelling. Maiolla decided to bare all and take up life modelling 10 years ago as a way of helping him readjust to society after a brain tumour. To close the show Ajak Kwai, an exciting young Sudanese singer/songwriter now living in Australia, performs in the Art Nation studio |
