Summary Global warming and climate change are here and the world is hurtling towards a crisis point. How much more abuse can the Earth take? What would happen to us if our water supplies suddenly dried up? How would we survive if our rubbish and waste matter were not collected? How would we cope without fuel for our vehicles? How would we survive without electricity or gas? Without radically reducing our consumption of four eco hotspots - energy, water, transport and waste - the consequences will be harsh - for all of us.This is a six-part reality series that lets viewers see what life could be like without all the things we take for granted. On Eco House Challenge two Australian suburban families - the Edwards and the Shepherds - find out what life would be like when their energy and water supplies are suddenly turned off; their rubbish bins locked and their vehicles clamped. After 24 hours, one eco hotspot will be returned to each family and a consumption level will be set, based on what scientists say will help save the planet. Once that level is maintained another hotspot will be returned. The families will not get their lives back until they drastically reduce their eco consumption, have all the hotspots balanced and learn to live a sustainable lifestyle. For the two families this could take weeks. For the Edwards family; a large, frugal family led by logistically minded ex-commando Spike and no-nonsense working Mum, Mary, the challenge is going to be tough. With seven in the family, including their elderly grandmother, Nonna, eco consumption is high. For the Shepherd family; an affluent family who love the good life, going without is not going to be easy. Headed by financially obsessed businessman, Cam and sharp-witted domestic workhorse, Shauna, this family of six are consumer addicts.Monitoring their every eco move is Glenn, The Guy in Charge of the Challenge. He's the umpire who sets the rules, ready to penalise the families when they exceed their target levels and reward them when they pass. Glenn's unexpected arrivals at the homes are sure to bring anxious moments.Help, however, is at hand. The families' Eco Coach is environment campaigner and scientific number cruncher, Tanya Ha. Together the Edwards and Shepherd families have just weeks to do what we all must do in just a few decades. But if they can pass the Eco House Challenge and help save the planet - so can we.
