The conversation is bound to get interesting when you're talking to three cabbies!This week on Enough Rope, Andrew Denton talks to Bruce from Melbourne, Chris from Sydney, and Gerard, who drives a cab on the Gold Coast.For Gerard, this profession requires "lots of patience and skin like a crocodile", but all three admit they love their jobs, and wouldn't be doing anything else.Chris used to be a bank manager, but had had enough of working behind a desk, so he took a chance and hasn't looked back. For him it meant joining the family business - his father, uncles and cousins all drive cabs. Bruce admits he didn't study at school and was heading to nowhere when his father saw an ad in the paper for cab drivers. He found his calling. He was 26 then, and now is 57.Between them, the stories are varied - the guy who left $3,000 on the back seat of Bruce's cab and who tipped him $200 when Bruce returned it; dealing with schoolies on the Gold Coast for Gerard; and Chris talks about his regulars and how involved in their lives he's become.Yes, they all admit sometimes it's a dangerous occupation, and there have been times when they've feared for their lives; and yes, they've all been offered sex instead of money - it happens all the time. But there are many funny stories in the life of a cabbie, and each admits driving a cab has been their own private university...
