Deciding the winner of these three inventions are: inventor and journalist Christine Kininmonth, futurist and author Mark Pesce, and woodworker and teacher Richard Vaughan. Inventions featured on the program: RECORD REVIRGINIZER - by inventor Cary Stoddard from NSWNothing can beat the smooth vintage sound of a vinyl record. The problem is, the grooves on a record that create its sound also attract dust, grit, grease and mould. There are plenty of record cleaning products around, but they can't get inside the grooves, creating the crackling sounds synonymous with ageing record collections. Inventor Cary Stoddard is a man who takes his record collection seriously. He began working in the audio industry 30 years ago when he was just a teenager. Keen to restore his favourite classics, Cary set his mind to developing his own solution.The Record Revirginizer can restore vinyl records to their original condition. Whilst most people think the sound interference we hear on a vinyl record is a result of scratches, the majority of unwanted crackles and pops are the result of dust and grease becoming embedded in the grooves of the record. The Record Revirginizer is a liquid substance that is poured over the record surface and massaged into the grooves until a 1mm coating is created. Once it has hardened, the substance can be easily peeled from the vinyl surface, taking all of the dust and dirt with it.DROP MATE - by inventor Daniel Wicks from NSWOn big properties where you need to ride a quad bike or motorbike around the paddocks, farmers end up constantly getting on and off to open the gate. The Drop Mate is a gate that you can drive straight through without getting off your bike. Daniel Wicks is 18 years old, and created the invention for an HSC Metals and Engineering project. It uses a mechanical system of wire rope and counterweights that allows the gate to be pushed open in either direction by the bike. Once the bike passes through, or technically over, the gate automatically lifts back into position.KWIKAZ - by inventor Steve Miranda from QLDScaffolding always has to be wrapped in shade cloth that protects the public from falling debris and keeps dust within the site. Currently the shade cloth is attached with non-reusable fasteners such as cable ties. This is a time-consuming and tedious task which often damages the shade cloth preventing it from being re-used. KwikAz is a two-part system for attaching shade cloth quickly and securely. The invention consists of specially designed, robust attachment clips, and a driver handle to apply them. KwikAz makes the entire process quicker and easier, and the clips can be easily recovered and reused at the end of a job |
