What causes sinkholes? And is there anything we can do about them? In this geological detective story, Professor Iain Stewart unearths millions of years of the earth's history as he searches for the answers. On 28 February 2013, in a quiet residential suburb east of Tampa, Florida, Jeff Bush was asleep in bed when he and his entire bedroom disappeared into an abyss. Terrifyingly, there was no warning and Jeff's body has never been recovered. He had been swallowed by a sinkhole. In the last few years, terrifying sinkholes have opened up in places as far apart as China and Guatemala. But it is in Florida where the occurrence and the fear of sinkholes is greatest. In this fascinating program, Professor Iain Stewart travels to Florida to reveal what sinkholes are and why they happen, what this underworld is really like and why some are deadly.
