Summary |
This episode deals with a troubling phenomenon know colloquially as the down-low -- Black men who have sex with other men, but deny they are homosexual. This secret society is examined by two different authors. Michael Stevens, Sr., a Black preacher, takes a hard line stance on the down low in his book "Straight Up," opining that the leadership of Black church and the Black family are now in danger because of homosexuality. In contrast, author Keith Boykin explores the relationship of the African-American community to homosexuality in "Beyond the Down Low." The dichotomy of a large segment of this community that are politically progressive, yet socially conservative, with a "don't ask, don't tell" attitude toward homosexuals and lesbians |
