In 1999, Damian and Josephine Loughran each donated a fifth of their lungs to their sister Sheila, a cystic fibrosis sufferer. The controversial 3-way operation carried a potential mortality rate of 300%, left the healthy lungs of Damian and Josephine permanently impaired and at best gave Sheila an extra five years to live.
