Summary "When Oxford University scientist Hugh Sinclair claimed in the 1940's that the fatty acid Omega-3 found in fish was good for your health, he was ridiculed and lost his university post. But times have changed and this documentary looks at how Omega-3 is now being hailed as a panacea. Omega-3 is a fatty acid which is essential to our well being although 60 years ago claiming that fat could be good for us was extremely controversial. But following the pioneering work of Hugh Sinclair, who established that eating Omega-3 assisted with weight loss and thinned the blood preventing clots and heart failure, scientific research into its benefits has continued.Thirty years ago scientists realised Omega-3 is an essential component of the brain, including the visual system and that boosting Omega-3 levels in the brain may help alleviate depression. Studies from America have correlated rates of depression with the amount of fish eaten, and countries that eat less fish have higher rates of depression. And Omega three has other positive effects as well. Two recent seminal studies, the Seven Countries Study and the GISSI Study which focused on heart disease, confirmed that Omega-3 does have a protective effect against cardiovascular disease. Research into the effect of Omega-3 on Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, autism, dyslexia, multiple sclerosis has also been conducted, proving that it does have a positive impact on these conditions too. The conclusion of doctors and nutritionists is that we should try to increase the levels of Omega-3 in our diet through eating vegetarian sources, such as flaxseeds and walnuts, or by eating more oily fish. Accordingly, the UK's Food Standards Agency recommends that we eat at least one portion of oily fish a week. (From the UK, in English) "
