| Summary |
This incredible two-part series follows comic, actor and social commentator Eddie Izzard as he attempts to run a staggering 27 marathons in 27 consecutive days across South Africa to commemorate Nelson Mandela's incarceration. Eddie's marathons give him a chance to tell Mandela's story and the turbulent history of South Africa. Eddie brings his humour and humanity to bear on the most difficult and moving of subjects as he travels the country, stopping at the places that matter most to Mandela. He meets the people whose lives Mandela has touched and reveals the chaotic story of a country that has undergone radical change. Eddie experiences adversity along the way and has to rapidly re-think his plans, producing a moving tribute to Nelson Mandela. Having put his near-collapse at the end of the last episode down to ̀€teething problems', things are back on track and for the first time Eddie gets to run on smooth tarmac as opposed to the rocky terrain at the start of his journey. However, his good fortune is fleeting and returning pain means a planned visit to Mandela's university Fort Hale is replaced with a trip to hospital. Health problems force Eddie to end his marathon attempt and instead he presents a moving tribute to Mandela as he visits the places and meets the people whose lives have been touched by Mandela.
