Summary |
This program is a four-part series that melds historical inquiry with period re-enactments to transport the viewer back to this turbulent and exciting time. In this final episode, Heinrich Schuder - doctor, scholar and cartographer - is sent to Venice on behalf of his home city of Nuremberg, to find out about commercial routes to India. Venice was the city where modern banking began. People were given a licence to put a cloth on a banca or table to carry out financial transactions. After Venice, Schuder then goes to Freiburg, a medieval German city whose layout is being studied by historians today. Schuder then travels to Portugal with maps for Martin Behaim, who made the first globe. On the way, he visits the French cathedral of Chartres, regarded by many as the most beautiful Gothic cathedral in the world. (In German, English subtitles) |
