On the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, SBS ONE will premiere this documentary special about the events in the lead up to this historical moment. On the morning of 13th of August 1961 the citizens of Berlin wake to a chorus of pneumatic drills and tanks, and discover their capital has been split in two by a barbed wire fence. Although initially, less than 20 people knew of 'Operation Rose', it was a bold plan prepared so perfectly that overnight 40 000 military and civilians were mobilised and, using 28 miles worth of stockpiled barbed wire, they sealed off West Berlin. One western journalist witnessed these events. Adam Kellet-Long, a journalist based in East Berlin, had seen tensions rise across the city throughout the summer of '61. Having received a tip off on the Saturday evening, he stays up all night and discovers thousands of men building a barbed wire fence through the streets whilst the citizens of Berlin sleep.Set within the backdrop of the struggle between world's two biggest political systems, hour by hour, the documentary utilises dramatic reconstructions, expert analysis, eyewitness reports, letters, diaries, personal photos and interviews, to detail the events of the night when the communists played one of the biggest bluffs of the 20th Century.
