Summary |
"Ifugao province is located along the Grand Cordillera mountain range in the Northern Philippines. It has an extensive collection of 2,000 year old rice terraces, linking traditional tribal communities in a cultural landscape of tremendous ecological significance. Recognition of this significance resulted in a 1995 inscription as the first living cultural landscape on the World Heritage List. This publication focuses on the impacts of tourism on the Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras, an outstanding model of sustainable use of limited land resources, using traditional knowledge-based technology that has evolved over the last two millennia. In 1995, the site was inscribed in the World Heritage List, in recognition of the living organically-evolved cultural landscape shaped by sacred traditions and the ingenuity of the Ifugao people. The site was added to the list of World Heritage Sites in Danger in 2001 as uncontrolled tourism and the introduction of open-market economy threatened both the natural heritage of the province and the traditional practices of its inhabitants." -- Publisher's website |
