Summary Every two years, music lovers pack St. David's Hall, Cardiff, for six nights of glamour and music at the world's premier vocal classical music competition. This year marks the 12th Singer of the World event, a tradition that has launched young opera and lieder singers into their professional careers - including such stars as Karita Matilla, Bryn Terfel and Lisa Gasteen, amongst others. Over 700 hopefuls applied this year, but only 24 made it to the final five-round competition. Soprano Nicole Cabell from the US captured the title of BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2005
