RESOURCE RICHIt's been four years since Living Black first reported on the ancient Aboriginal rock art under threat from mining in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Now, there are calls for the Burrup Peninsula's thousands of rock engravings to be World Heritage Listed. Some say this may be the only way to keep them safe in this industry hub. "If they had any form of accident there... it would destroy thousands if not millions of the carvings and destroy the integrity of the Burrup", says local Greens MP Robin Chapple. Living Black's Kodie Bedford speaks to traditional owners about their concerns for the cutural history the Burrup holds. OFF THE WALLOne of Australia's most valuable art collections sits in a commercial storage facility because no museum or gallery will offer it a home. The paintings, photographs and memorabilia have been collected over decades by Sydney artists Gordon and Elaine Syron. Now they fear for their collection's future. Some of the country's key figures think the unique collection is the perfect basis for a national Aboriginal collection, and there is a push to find a permanent home for the artworks. Many of the local Aboriginal families are finding it hard to make ends meet and put food on the table. Overcrowding and supporting extended family members is putting a strain on many people's budgets. And then there are the needs of the homeless and those with drug and alcohol addictions. A local Aboriginal organisation has partnered with a Victorian charity to alleviate the burden many face. It's providing emergency food to individuals and welfare groups in the community |
