Summary RAT HOLE MINORSChild labour doesn't come much more extreme than for those working in India's coal mines. Known as 'rat hole' mining, children as young as ten are sent deep underground to dig for coal in spaces too small for adults to reach. Based on extensive surveys, one NGO estimates that tens of thousands of children are being exploited in this way... many of them trafficked. On Tuesday's Dateline, Amos Roberts sees first-hand the dangerous and illegal conditions they work in, but there is light at the end of the tunnel for some of them. He follows the rescue of two of the children, as they're finally offered the chance of an education and a new life back home in Nepal. But why are authorities still turning a blind eye to the plight of India's coal mining kids?FREEDOM FIGHTERSFighting in prison is nothing new, but in Thailand it can earn a reduction in sentence rather than more time behind bars. On Tuesday's Dateline, Nick Lazaredes meets the prisoners literally fighting for their freedom. They're being trained in the martial art of Muay Thai, then pitted against visiting fighters from around the world in organised tournaments. The prize if they win is the chance to reduce their sentence, and even unlock new opportunities as professional fighters and trainers on the outside. In a country facing a growing prison population, could this unlikely program actually help in the fight against crime?DOWN AND OUTIt's one of the world's richest economies, presenting an outward image of affluence and efficiency, but thousands of the industrial workers who helped build Japan's wealth are now homeless. In a district of Osaka that doesn't even appear on the map, Dateline meets some of the 10,000 people estimated to be sleeping rough on the city's streets. They compete for the tiny amount of work on offer, scraping by with little money or food, but often still too proud to ask their estranged families for help
