Summary The case study describes a daily diary design to examine children's emotional responses to negative peer experiences and the roles friends and classmates can play. The researcher describes the first study she conducted as an independent researcher. The case study highlights some challenges and considerations for research with children and for doing research at an undergraduate institution. Respect for participants will be emphasized through discussion of informed consent and of "giving back" to participants. The reader will also be introduced to multilevel modeling. The case study will address value of research as a teaching tool, opportunity to connect to the community, and context for mentorship
