Summary Scientific management strategies can help in exploring anthropogenic wastes (human-made materials) as potential resources through the urban mining concept and be a panacea for sustainable development. This book covers five broader aspects of waste management and resource recovery in urban mining including solid and liquid waste management and treatment. It explains sustainable approaches of urban mining for an effective management of solid and liquid wastes and facilitate their conversion into secondary resources. Overall, this book provides details of urban mining and its different applications including current waste management problems, practices, and challenges faced worldwide. Presents holistic approach for urban mining considering various types of wastes Describes contemporary integrated approaches for waste management with specific case studies Provides technical, social, and environmental aspects of solid and liquid wastes Considers aspects of sustainability and circular bio-economy Incorporates pertinent case studies on water and wastewater management This volume caters to researchers, graduate students in environmental engineering, solid waste management, wastewater treatment, and materials science
Notes Dr. Pankaj Pathak is an Assistant Professor at SRM University Amaravati, India, with a keen interest in sustainable and green energy resources, waste management, and geochemistry, including sustainable handling of nuclear waste and associated environmental impacts. She was involved in several research projects at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-Bombay) related to nuclear waste management and characterization of buffer materials for nuclear waste repositories. Also, she has gained research experience in hazardous waste and liquid waste treatment technology, along with hydrometallurgical recovery of metals from waste streams, their safe disposal, and remediation techniques at CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory (Jamshedpur). Dr. Prangya Ranjan Rout is a Researcher at INHA University, Incheon, Republic of Korea. He holds an M. Tech degree in Biotechnology and a Ph. D. in Environmental Engineering. His research interest lies in the domain of anaerobic digestion, bioconversion of wastes to value-added products, emerging contaminants removal, membrane technology, recovery and reuse of energy and resources, and physicochemical as well as biological treatment of water and wastewater. He has authored over 50 publications, including refereed journal articles, book chapters, national and international conference presentations, technical notes, and a patent. Some of the awards he has received include Odisha Young Scientist Award 2017, Best Practice Oriented Paper 2019 by ASCE-EWRI, and Outstanding Reviewer 2020 by ASCE. He is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Hazardous, Toxic, and Radioactive Waste and has served as a guest editor of a special issue of the journal
