This case study reflects on methodological choices and their implications when planning research on and seeking access to a workplace setting. The choice of a mixed-methods approach is explained in its connection to the research problem, and a detailed illustration of the research design and its implications is provided. In particular, the importance of negotiation and methodological flexibility is highlighted here in the process of gaining access to the research field. In a workplace setting, the highly unequal distribution of power between researchers and gatekeepers can transform the process of access in a complex bargaining stage which presents risks that may severely affect the researchers' ability to address their research questions
