Summary |
The Bretons of the peninsular region of Brittany in western France have their own unique culture and traditions. Breton, a Celtic language, and Gallo, a language derived from Latin brought by the Romans 2000 years ago, are still spoken there. Music and its language strongly define Brittany, but it has been predominantly through music that Bretons have successfully resisted intense pressure from Paris and the American media for cultural standardization. Despite these persistent influences, Breton culture is thriving. In many a lively scene, the film explores how musicians of Brittany perpetuate their Breton heritage at home and in festivals, dances, classes, contests and concerts. Witness masters of the craft continue the exchange and perpetuation of their historical lineage of instrument manufacture techniques, songs, instrumental music, dance and storytelling, forming the Bretons' unique cultural lifeblood |
