Nobody knew where the dog nicknamed 'Houdini' came from but the town dog-catcher O'Malley could not catch him. Gradually Houdini earned the respect of the townspeople, the hatred of O'Malley and the unreserved admiration of O'Malley's son Red. It is Red who ultimately turns tragedy into triumph for Houdini
