Summary Australian Dance Theatre (ADT) under the artistic direction of Garry Stewart is renowned internationally as a gutsy, explosive, and highly original, contemporary dance company. Offering a rare behind-the-scenes look, Artscape: Artists At Work tracks the company as they prepared to mount a radical new work Be Your Self for the 2010 Adelaide Festival of Arts. Since 1999 when Garry Stewart came on board as artistic director, the style of ADT has changed radically. Artscape: Artists At Work reveals the exhausting demands placed on the ADT dancers under Stewart's reign. The dancers are trained in a number of distinct, physically challenging disciplines. In addition to classical ballet and contemporary dance they are coached in gymnastics, break dance and martial arts. The result is a fusion of forms that generate fast, aggressive and risky dance. Be Your Self features nine dancers and one actor and is performed amongst an avant garde set developed by visionary New York architectural firm Diller, Scofidio + Renfro. This compelling documentary tracks the physical and personal journey of Stewart and four of ADT's dynamic and unique dancers. The world they live in can at times be both exhausting and exhilarating. These performers are not average dancers. Tough, determined and passionate, they put their bodies on the line. "What makes an ADT dancer an ADT dancer is that we're all very hungry to learn. As a dancer you have to be hardened, because it's not easy and it's not for the timid." Troy Honeysett, ADT dancer.PRODUCTION DETAILS:Artscape: Artists At Work is produced by ABC TV.
