Summary This case study focuses on the developmental process, and some of the inherent difficulties associated with becoming a researcher. The author reflects upon his dissertation work and candidly explores his self-doubt, issues with persistence, and personal meaning surrounding the process of transitioning from a novice researcher to a scholar. Structural equation modeling, once viewed by the author as a barrier or nuisance to completing his dissertation, was ultimately found to be a necessary building block toward his self-efficacy as a researcher. Barriers to research success, both real and fictional, along with common research-related myths are explored as the author attempts to promote an appreciation for the developmental process of becoming a researcher
