Summary Jennifer Byrne Presents Crime is a dark, dangerous and fabulous look at the phenomenon that is crime fiction. Ever since Sherlock Holmes first picked up his microscope and headed out of 221B Baker Street readers can't get enough crime. In fact one in every three novels sold in Australia is a crime book.Crime fiction is so all encompassing that there are more sub-genres than you can poke a Smith & Wesson at, including 'cosy' crime, hard-boiled, noir, police procedural, courtroom and comedy crime, all with their devoted admirers. We gathered some crime lovers to investigate what makes it so popular, what makes us want to read crime fiction, and, for the authors, what drew the them to want to write about it?Joining host Jennifer Byrne are Melbourne crime writer Shane Maloney; poet and verse crime author Dorothy Porter; actor, director and prolific crime reviewer Graeme Blundell; and former High Court judge Ian Callinan. Guest bios:Shane Maloney is a Melbourne writer best-known for his laconic and humorous crime series featuring accidental detective Murray Whelan. The Brush-Off won the 1997 Ned Kelly Award for Best Australian Crime Novel. The sixth novel in the Murray Whelan series Sucked In, was released in May.Dorothy Porter is a Melbourne based writer and teacher who specialises in poetry. Her verse novel The Monkey's Mask won the 1994 Age Book of the Year for poetry. Her latest work is El Dorado, a murder mystery verse novel set in Melbourne.Graeme Blundell is well known as an actor, director, producer, writer and biographer. He is also a journalist and book reviewer for The Australian newspaper. His most recent book was King: Life and Comedy of Graham Kennedy. Ian Callinan recently retired from the High Court where he had served since 1998. He is also a playwright and novelist, author of crime books including The Lawyer and the Libertine, and Appointment at Amalfi. Quote: Shane Maloney: "I think it's going to take over the world! Nice literature you've got here, pity if anything should happen to it! That it's so encompassing now that anything that guarantees the reader a good time I think should be classified as crime!"
