BOWEL CANCERAround 80 Australians die each week from bowel cancer. Fortunately, it can be treated successfully if detected in its early stages, but currently less than 40 per cent of bowel cancers are detected early. A test kit distributed as part of a national screening program has helped improve early detection rates, but will the program be continued? Dr Maryanne Demasi reports on the present threat to end the program and the call from doctors and the Cancer Council to not only continue the program but to expand it. JELLYFISH VORTEXThe upside down jelly fish Cassiopea, spends most of its time with its 'legs' in the air and the 'top' of its bell resting on the seafloor. Researchers from the University of North Carolina injected dye into the sand below the jellyfish and demonstrated how the bell's pulse creates eddies that bring nutrients to the frilly feeding arms. WALKING STRAIGHTIt's true that people who get lost in the desert without a compass can end up walking around in circles - but why? Graham Phillips and Ruben Meerman get together to demonstrate the phenomenon and try to solve the puzzle |
