In Australia, the average life expectancy for Indigenous men is 59. For non-Indigenous men it is 77. As Prime Minister Kevin Rudd vows to close the gap in life expectancy between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians, Aboriginal writer/director, Lee Willis, speaks to the former Federal Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Mal Brough; the Country Women's Association; his local GP, and ordinary Aboriginal people to find out what caused the gap and what can be done to close it.Flour, Sugar And Tea goes behind the statistics to tell the personal story of John De Satge (Johno), an inspiring Aboriginal man who died early of non-alcohol related cirrhosis of the liver as the result of an unhealthy diet."Johno is an Aboriginal man from the far Northwest of Queensland who is dying. You can hear the depth of his heartache in his voice," says Lee. "The other day I asked him, 'Do you feel frightened?'. His reply was, 'Death doesn't scare me. Only the thought of not seeing my kids grow up, or seeing them go into the same cycle as I did'."Johno is not alone. The Aboriginal community in Australia suffers from far higher incidences of heart disease, diabetes and other diet and lifestyle-related health problems than non-Indigenous Australians. This is the legacy of hundreds of years of interference by white people in the traditional Aboriginal diet.What is the solution? Who can help? And why is it happening?
